TOR is an onion router. This means that the information you pass into its network is wrapped in multiple layers of cryptography to ensure total secrecy.
Summary
TOR is useful for hiding your identity from big brother. This is done by setting up a chain of connections between different participating computers, rendering traffic analysis useless.
TOR gives anonymity, but it does not provide security. By design information passing between the entrance and exit of the TOR network is NOT PROTECTED. This means that unscrupulous individuals running your exit node can tap into the data you are sending and eavesdrop. Not good if you're sending passwords or doing internet banking.
More information on the usage of TOR will be provided in due course.
